'It's almost like a weapon': How the blonde bombshell has symbolised desire and danger Western culture, she says, has built a whole mythology around female blondeness − from religious iconography and fairy tales, to art and advertising − that has told specific stories about what it means to be blonde. In cinema's early years, comedies such as Platinum Blonde (1931) and Bombshell (1933), starring Jean Harlow, embedded concepts of the dazzling, devastatingly beautiful blonde into the cultural vernacular. "The idea that you're a bombshell, it's almost like a weapon," says Nead. "On the one hand, it is this kind of ideal, but at the same time, it's also threatening."   Before Harlow, there was another − more natural-looking − blonde on the scene: Mary Pickford, whose amber curls helped earn her the moniker of "America's Sweetheart". But while Pickford played the guileless girl waiting to be rescued, Harlow's peroxide blonde ...

Over 150 dead in Myanmar and Thailand after huge earthquake A huge 7.7 magnitude earthquake has hit central Myanmar, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). At least 144 people have died and 732 have been injured so far in the country, Myanmar military leader Min Aung Hlaing said. The epicentre was 16km (10 miles) north-west of the city of Sagaing, sending strong tremors that were felt as far as south-west China and Thailand. Meanwhile, around 100 construction workers are missing after an unfinished high-rise building collapsed hundreds of miles away in Bangkok, according to Thailand's deputy prime minister. At least seven people have died at the site in Thailand, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. A rescuer in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, told the BBC the damage is "enormous". The total number of people killed and injured by the earthquake are expected to rise in the coming days. There have been reports of roads bucklin...

Putin says Greenland 'nothing to do with Russia' in nod to US In Murmansk, the largest city north of the Arctic circle, President Vladimir Putin vowed to "strengthen Russia's global leadership in the Arctic", while warning that "geopolitical competition in the region" was intensifying. The first example he gave was Donald Trump's idea to acquire Greenland. But from the Kremlin leader there was no criticism of his US counterpart. And that's telling, as the White House and the Kremlin try to rebuild relations. "In short, America's plans in relation to Greenland are serious," President Putin said in an address to Russia's Arctic Forum in Murmansk. "These plans have deep historical roots. And it's clear that the US will continue to systematically pursue its geo-strategic, military-political and economic interests in the Аrctic. "As for Greenland this is a matter for two specific countries. It has nothing to do with us....

Trump officials attack journalist after Signal leak published in full The White House reacted furiously on Wednesday after The Atlantic magazine published messages between national security officials in a Signal group chat in their entirety. President Donald Trump called the reporting "all a witch hunt" and declared the publication a "failed magazine". Jeffrey Goldberg, the journalist who was inadvertently included in the chat among senior cabinet leaders, shared texts in which US defence secretary Pete Hegseth provided sensitive information such as detailed timetables and unit information ahead of a US strike in Yemen. Goldberg said he decided to publish the information after the Trump administration accused him of lying that classified information was shared. Officials continued to maintain that position after the new messages were published. But some senior officials began to acknowledge the episode was a mistake, including Trump himself. When asked by reporters ...

Bollywood actress vindicated over boyfriend's death after media hounding Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty was called "a gold digger" and "a murderer". She was slut-shamed and spent 27 days in prison after a hate-filled vicious media campaign in 2020 alleged she had been involved in the death of her actor boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput. Now, India's federal investigators have told a court that Rajput, a rising star in India's popular Hindi film industry, died by suicide and that neither Chakraborty nor her family had a role in his death. In a statement shared with the BBC, senior lawyer Satish Maneshinde, who fought Chakraborty's case, said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had "thoroughly investigated every aspect of the case from all angles and closed it". The findings have been presented in a special court in Mumbai, which will now decide whether to close the case or to order further investigation. Mr Maneshinde said Chakraborty...

Teenage Afghan girls were banned from school - now these classes are their only option Amina will never forget the moment her childhood changed. She was just 12 years old when she was told she could no longer go to school like boys. The new school year began on Saturday in Afghanistan but for the fourth consecutive year, girls over 12 were barred from attending classes. "All my dreams were shattered," she says, her voice fragile and filled with emotion. Amina, now 15, has always wanted to become a doctor. As a little girl, she suffered from a heart defect and underwent surgery. The surgeon who saved her life was a woman – an image that stayed with her and inspired her to take her studies seriously. But in 2021, when the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan, Amina's dream was abruptly put on hold. "When my dad told me the schools were closed, I was really sad. It was a very bad feeling," she says quietly. "I wanted to get an education so that I could become a...

Meta considers charging for ad-free Facebook and Instagram in the UK Facebook and Instagram owner Meta is considering a paid subscription in the UK which would remove adverts from its platforms. Under the plans, people using the social media sites could be asked to pay for an ad-free experience if they do not want their data to be tracked. It comes as the company agreed to stop targeting ads at a British woman last week following a protracted legal battle. Meta already provides ad-free subscriptions for Facebook and Instagram users in the EU, starting from €5.99 (£5) a month. A spokesperson for the firm said the company was "exploring the option" of offering a similar service in the UK. They said the firm was "engaging constructively" with the UK data watchdog about the subscription service, following a consultation in 2024. The Information Commissioner's Office previously said it expected Meta to consider data protection concerns before it launched an ad-free s...

More than 50,000 killed in Gaza since Israel offensive began, Hamas-run ministry says More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israel's military campaign in Gaza, the territory's Hamas-run health ministry has announced. That number - 50,021 - equates to about 2.1% of the 2.3 million pre-war population of the territory, or around 1 in 46 people. A total of 113,274 others had been injured in the same period, the health ministry said. Figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health (MoH) have been widely used throughout the war and are seen as reliable by the United Nations (UN) and international institutions. But Israel has consistently disputed data published by Gaza's authorities. International journalists, including the BBC, are blocked by Israel from entering Gaza independently, so are unable to verify figures from either side. The figures released by the MoH for the number of people killed do not differentiate between civilians and fighters. In November, the UN...

Israel orders army to 'seize additional territories' in Gaza Israel's defence minister has told the military to "seize additional areas in Gaza" and threatened to permanently occupy parts of it, if Hamas does not free all remaining hostages. Israel Katz said that the military would continue its ground operation in Gaza "with increasing intensity" until all of the hostages "both living and dead" were returned. It is thought 24 of the 59 hostages still held in Gaza are alive, but their fate remains in the balance after negotiations on the second phase of the ceasefire deal failed to progress. The fragile ceasefire that had been in place since January ended this week as Israel resumed its ground campaign and bombing of Gaza, killing hundreds of people. The situation in the Strip has been described as "gravely, gravely concerning" with "absolutely desperate tragedies occurring all over Gaza" by Sam Rose from the UN agency for Pa...
