'It's almost like a weapon': How the blonde bombshell has symbolised desire and danger Western culture, she says, has built a whole mythology around female blondeness − from religious iconography and fairy tales, to art and advertising − that has told specific stories about what it means to be blonde. In cinema's early years, comedies such as Platinum Blonde (1931) and Bombshell (1933), starring Jean Harlow, embedded concepts of the dazzling, devastatingly beautiful blonde into the cultural vernacular. "The idea that you're a bombshell, it's almost like a weapon," says Nead. "On the one hand, it is this kind of ideal, but at the same time, it's also threatening."   Before Harlow, there was another − more natural-looking − blonde on the scene: Mary Pickford, whose amber curls helped earn her the moniker of "America's Sweetheart". But while Pickford played the guileless girl waiting to be rescued, Harlow's peroxide blonde ...

Man accused of Kim Kardashian Paris robbery 'regrets' $10m heist The trial has begun of 10 people who are accused of robbing Kim Kardashian at a Paris hotel in 2016. The reality TV star and business woman was tied up and held at gunpoint in a luxury suite where she was staying during Paris Fashion Week. About $10m (£7.5m) worth of jewels were taken from her, including a $4m (£2.9m) diamond engagement from then-husband Kanye West. In a grand courtroom adorned with 19th Century tapestries, the court was given a fascinating snapshot into the lives of the diverse cast of characters suspected of involvement in the heist. For the first one up - 71-year-old Yunice Abbas - this was done through a "enquête de personnalité", a sort of background report on a person accused of a crime which French courts regularly include in their trials. These reports take in elements of the defendant's family history, behaviour and work to paint a picture of their lives and help jurors make...

UN's top court begins hearings on Israel's legal duties towards Palestinians The UN's top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has begun hearings for an opinion on Israel's legal duty to allow aid to Palestinians and to co-operate with the UN's Palestinian aid agency, Unrwa – both of which Israel has barred in Gaza. Israel stopped allowing aid into Gaza on 2 March, which it said was to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages. The UN and aid agencies say food and supplies are running out in Gaza, which Israel denies. Last year Israel severed ties with Unrwa, accusing it of colluding with Hamas. The hearings at The Hague are expected to last for five days, though a ruling could take many months. Ammar Hijazi, the Palestinian ambassador to International Organisations in The Hague, opened the hearings with a disturbing and graphic testimony. He accused Israel of a "genocidal campaign" against the Palestinians, adding that Israel's "crimes...

Bottle kicking trampling left me unable to walk A woman says she has been left unable to walk after she was accidentally trampled by players participating in an annual Easter Monday tradition. Alexie Winship said she was among spectators watching the Hallaton bottle kicking event in Leicestershire, where players attempt to wrestle wood kegs through a field to win. The 23-year-old was caught up in a scrum and seriously injured. At hospital, she was found to have suffered a neurological injury and a bleed on her spine, which has left her without most feeling below her waist. Ms Winship, who remains in hospital, said she could not remember much of what happened. " I was on the outskirts [of the players], just watching when a beer keg came flying out in my direction," Ms Winship said. "I couldn't get out of the way. I was with friends who said I got kicked in the head, knocked out, and then trampled on. "It was like a stampede. One of my friends pulled me out and I ...

UN agency runs out of food aid in Gaza after Israeli blockade The UN World Food Programme says it has depleted all its food stocks in Gaza, where Israel has blocked deliveries of humanitarian aid for seven weeks. "Today, WFP delivered its last remaining food stocks to hot meals kitchens," it warned. "These kitchens are expected to fully run out of food in the coming days." Israel cut off aid on 2 March and resumed its offensive two weeks later after the collapse of a two-month ceasefire, saying it was putting pressure on Hamas to release its remaining hostages. The UN says Israel is obliged under international law to ensure supplies for the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza. Israel says it is complying with international law and there is no aid shortage. At the end of March, all 25 bakeries supported by the WFP in Gaza were forced to close after wheat flour and cooking fuel ran out. Food parcels distributed to families containing two weeks' rations were also exha...

Virginia Giuffre, Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein accuser, dies by suicide Virginia Giuffre, who accused Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein of sexual abuse, has died by suicide aged 41, her family has confirmed. Giuffre was one of the most outspoken accusers of convicted sex offenders Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, his former girlfriend. She alleged they trafficked her to the Duke of York when she was 17, which Prince Andrew has strenuously denied. Relatives said in a statement on Friday that she had been a "fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse", and that the "toll of abuse... became unbearable". "She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking," a statement from her family said. "Virginia was a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking. She was the light that lifted so many survivors," her family's statement said. It said the mother of three died on Thurs...

Israeli military admits its troops killed UN worker in Gaza Strip Israel's military has admitted killing a United Nations (UN) worker with tank fire, having previously denied responsibility, in an incident in the Gaza Strip last month. After a UN staff member was killed when a UN compound in Deir al-Balah was damaged on 19 March, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had not struck the site. But the IDF said on Thursday that the initial findings of its investigation into the incident indicated its troops had in fact killed the UN worker after wrongly identifying the building as containing an "enemy presence". It said in a statement: "The building was struck due to assessed enemy presence and was not identified by the forces as a UN facility." These preliminary findings have been shared with the UN and the full conclusion will also be provided, it said. It added: "The IDF regrets this serious incident and continues to conduct thorough review processes to d...

Gaza health ministry denies manipulating death toll figures At al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Alam Hirzallah resigns himself to a grim task: registering the deaths of the wife and two children of his grieving cousin. His family brought the bodies here on an electric rickshaw or tuk-tuk. They found them in their house in eastern Gaza City after Israeli shelling hit the family home. Asma Hirzallah, Mayar, 5, and Abdullah, 3, were killed. "The hospital asked for their full names and ID numbers," explains Alam, referring to the numbers all Palestinians are given in a population registry administered by Israel. "They gave us a paper to confirm they were martyred and told us to come back for the death certificate. Now we don't know where to go to bury them as the cemeteries are in areas under Israeli control." At least 51,266 people have been killed in the 18 months since the Gaza war began, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, with nearly a third of the de...

Gold prices hit new record in global market Investors have flocked to gold as a safe haven after US President Donald Trump's harsh attacks on tariffs and the Federal Reserve. As a result, the price of gold reached $3,500 per ounce for the first time on Tuesday. The price of gold reached a high of $3,500.10 during the day before falling slightly to $3,467.87. Gold prices have been continuously setting records for the past few weeks. The reason for this is said to be investors seeking safe havens due to the weak dollar and the fear of a major collapse in the stock market. The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have triggered a trade war between the US and the world's second largest economy, China. Gold prices have risen by more than 30 percent since the beginning of this year. Rania Gulley, senior market analyst at trading firm XS.com, said, "This rise reflects fears of a possible recession in the US economy and political tensions." Especially when Pr...

New Israel-Gaza ceasefire plan proposed:                                                   Hamas A senior Palestinian official familiar with Israel-Hamas ceasefire negotiations has told the BBC that Qatari and Egyptian mediators have proposed a new formula to end the war in Gaza. According to the official, it envisages a truce lasting between five and seven years, the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, a formal end to the war, and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. A senior Hamas delegation was due to arrive in Cairo for consultations. The last ceasefire collapsed a month ago when Israel resumed bombing Gaza, with both sides blaming each other for the failure to keep it going. Israel has not commented on the mediators' plan. Hamas will be represented at dis...

54 killed in Gaza airstrikes, Netanyahu orders more pressure Israeli airstrikes in the besieged Gaza Strip have killed at least 54 Palestinians and wounded many more, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to increase pressure on Hamas, Al Jazeera reported. Israeli forces continued their bombardment of Gaza throughout Saturday, killing at least 54 Palestinians, a report said on Sunday (April 20). The death toll in the besieged enclave has risen to more than 51,150. Netanyahu vowed to continue the war in Gaza after Hamas rejected another temporary ceasefire offer and demanded a deal to end the conflict in exchange for the release of prisoners. Netanyahu ordered an escalation of attacks to increase pressure on Hamas. The death toll in the Gaza Strip since Israel's genocidal offensive in October 2023 has risen to 51,157, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Saturday. The number of injured has also risen to 116,724. Many people are still trapped under rubble and on the s...

Police algorithm said Lina was at 'medium' risk. Then she was killed Her ex-partner had been threatening her at home in the Spanish seaside town of Benalmádena. That day, he'd allegedly raised his hand as if to hit her. "There had been violent episodes - she was scared," Lina's cousin Daniel recalls. When she got to the police station, she was interviewed and her case registered with VioGén, a digital tool which assesses the likelihood of a woman being attacked again by the same man. VioGén - an algorithm-based system - asks 35 questions about the abuse and its intensity, the aggressor's access to weapons, his mental health and whether the woman has left, or is considering leaving, the relationship. It then records the threat to her as "negligible", "low", "medium", "high" or "extreme". The category is used to make decisions about the allocation of police resources to protect the woman. Lina was deemed to b...
