Biden formally pardons son
US President Joe Biden has officially pardoned his son
Hunter. He announced this in a statement in the United States on Sunday. He
also described Hunter's sentencing as a failure of the court to ensure a fair
trial. Hunter Biden has been sentenced to prison for two criminal offenses. Biden
had previously said that he would not interfere in his son's trial. In a
statement, Biden said, "If you examine the facts of Hunter's case, anyone
can understand that he was targeted simply because he is my son. And this is
wrong." Biden's decision will put the independence of the US judiciary in
question. This incident occurred at a time when President-elect Donald Trump
has nominated the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) himself. He
is also going to appoint him to the Justice Department himself. Hunter Biden
was indicted earlier this year on charges of making false statements about drug
use and weapons. In addition, he was convicted of tax evasion. However, he was
not sentenced to prison. Biden has repeatedly said that he will not pardon his
son. He explained the reason for his change of heart yesterday. He said he had
said he would not interfere in the decision-making process of the judiciary. He
did not back down from his promise even after seeing his son face a purposeful
and unfair trial.
Biden alleged in
a statement that the case against his son was instigated by several opposition
parties in Congress. He alleged that the opposition parties instigated such
incitement to oppose Biden in the election. There are examples of such pardons
by US presidents before. Former US President Bill Clinton pardoned his
half-brother in a cocaine-related case. Donald Trump also pardoned Bayi in a
tax evasion case during his previous term. They were all sentenced to prison.
Last September, Hunter Biden was sentenced to 17 years in prison in a tax
evasion case. In addition, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison in a separate
gun-related case.
