China controls the rare earths the world buys - can Trump's new deals change that? US President Donald Trump has signed a flurry of deals on his Asia visit to secure the supply of rare earths, a critical sector that China has long dominated. The deals with Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia differ in size and substance and it's too early to assess their tangible impact. But they all include efforts to diversify access to the minerals that have become essential for advanced manufacturing, from electric vehicles to smartphones. The agreements, which aim to lock partners into trading with the US, are a clear bid to reduce dependence on China, ahead of a key meeting with its leader Xi Jinping. They could eventually challenge Beijing's stranglehold over rare earths, but experts say it will be a costly process that will take years.  Palestinian journalist burned alive in Israeli attack

Palestinian journalist dies in Saraili attack

Journalist Ahmed Mansour died on Tuesday after being severely burned in an Israeli airstrike on a journalists' tent in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. Palestinian media reported that he was seen burning alive after the attack.

He was a correspondent for the Palestine Today News Agency. The attack took place on Monday, in a tent for journalists next to Nasser Hospital. Video of the attack went viral on social media, showing Mansour burning.

Mansour died on Tuesday morning, according to the state-run Wafa news agency. Two journalists have been killed and eight others wounded in the attack so far.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the attack on Monday. It said the target was journalist Hassan al-Salayyeh, who Tel Aviv claims is a member of Hamas. He was reportedly wounded in the attack.

Since the start of the Israeli operation in Gaza in October 2023, 211 Palestinian journalists have been killed, according to local authorities. Since March 18, Israeli forces have resumed their heavy attacks on Gaza. Since then, about 1,400 people have been killed and more than 3,400 injured. The attacks also broke a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement reached in January.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced that the attacks on Gaza would increase. His announcement is a sign of the implementation of former US President Donald Trump's proposed plan to remove Palestinians from Gaza.

Since October 2023, more than 50,700 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant in November for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. At the same time, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the events in Gaza.
